A race against time in archaeology

Selected as one of China's top ten New archaeological discoveries, listed as one of China's top 100 Archaeological Discoveries in one Hundred Years, and the precious relics of the Han Dynasty are popular at home and abroad.

Xuzhou has made remarkable archaeological achievements in recent years, which cannot be separated from the perseverance of xuzhou archaeologists in spite of wind and rain.

Wang Qingguang, a young man from Shandong province, was admitted to Xuzhou Museum in 2015. Born in the late 1980s, he has become a senior archaeologist in the Archaeology Department. When wang Qingguang was asked why he liked archaeology, the question he thought was easy made him think for a while: "There is no reason why I like archaeology. I have no reason to pursue a career and do one thing well in my life."

It seems that the slow pace of the archaeologists, in fact, has been in the rescue of the city's cultural context, the race against time.

In his first year at work, Wang Qingguang was invited to work in API Xuzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China. The rich cultural heritage gives archeologists a wide space to show their support. Under the premise of minimizing the impact on the duration of municipal engineering, the archaeologists need to balance various relations and eliminate various obstacles on the site of discovering ancient sites, so as to explore and explore inch by inch in the exploration area. Nine well-preserved brick chamber tombs were found in the excavation of the western Jin Dynasty tomb in Zhou Xiapi Temple, which provided important data for the study of the history of Xiapi country in the Western Jin Dynasty.

From 2018 to 2019, a total of 49 tombs were excavated in Qiangou Han Dynasty cemetery in Xinyi, revealing the remains of han Dynasty mounds for the first time in Xuzhou.

With the attention paid to cultural relics and archaeology, the restoration work of cultural relics that was once little known is coming into the public eye more and more. Unexpectedly, the average age of cultural relics restorers in Xuzhou Museum is less than 30 years old when they "carve time" on ancient objects.

According to the restoration plan, in the next three years, Xu bo will restore a relatively complete painted lacquer coffin of the princes of the Eastern Han Dynasty found in Tushan No. 2 tomb for the first time in China. How many nails were found in the collapsed coffin plate? Where are the pieces of each sarcophagus located? Under the bright floodlights, the atmosphere of a group of young people discussing enthusiastically makes people forget that they are in the tomb of thousands of years.

Most of the cultural relics unearthed from the three tombs in Tushan are temporarily placed in the original Tushan Han Tomb exhibition room. Li Zongmin, a "post-90s" member of the Ministry of Culture, Protection, Science and Technology, was undaunted by the complicated coffin fragments: "The restoration plan has been submitted to the higher authorities for approval. With the guidance of experts and support from all sides, we are confident to find the answers of ancient people from the historical mists and then integrate and restore them in front of the public."

Such arduous and challenging restoration work is not the first for Xu bo's cultural relic repairers.

Many years later, the restoration process of king Jin Lu's jade garment in Lion Rock is still a "nightmare" for the restorers who do not want to recall: "More than 4000 jade pieces were completely disordered by the tomb robbers when they removed the gold wisp. It took two years to classify, code, arrange and combine the jade pieces."

The restored jade garment, carrying the civilization and wisdom of the Han dynasty, has repeatedly traveled across the ocean to show Chinese culture to the world, making xuzhou's darders very proud.

So far, the team has restored four pieces of jade clothing. As Zhao xiaowei said, "Reasoning back from the scattered objects, discovering the evidence chain presented by the relics themselves is the greatest joy in solving the puzzle."
