Traffic

Xuzhou is located at the border area of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui, with Huaihai on its east, the Central Plains on its west, Jianghuai region on its south and Qilu on its north, making it a “the thoroughfare of five provinces”. It is an important comprehensive transportation junction in China. The truck lines of three national expressways of Lianyungang-Khorgos, Beijing-Fujian and Beijing-Shanghai Expressway join in the city, the trunk railway of Beijing-Shanghai and Lanzhou-Lianyungang Railway join in the city, the trunk water transport line Beijing- Hangzhou Canal runs along the city, Xuzhou Guan Yin International Airport is the only large trunk airport in Huaihai Economic Zone and the transportation pipeline in Xuzhou is an important component of East China Oil Pipeline extending 2642.71km. Xuzhou has formed the three-dimensional transportation pattern of “Junction of Five Means of Transportation”, i.e. highway, railway, water transport, airway and pipeline and has developed into national highway trunk, large road-network railway hub in the east of China, national waterway transport hub and large civil airport of national first-class airway trunk. 

Highway 

Xuzhou has construction five expressways such as Lianyungang-Khorgos, Beijing-Fujian, Beijing-Shanghai, Nanjing-Xuzhou and Jining-Xuzhou Expressway, with a traffic mileage of 412km, which forms the primary “two transverse, two longitudinal and one ring” expressway network. Expressway between Xuzhou and main national cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an has been constructed, so is that between Xuzhou and main surrounding cities such as Nanjing, Hefei, Zhengzhou, Jinan, Lianyungang, etc., realizing the target of half a day’s drive. Several national and provincial highway trunk networks run through the city, including five national highways of 104, 205, 206, 310 and 311as well as 11 provincial highways of 121, 249, 250, 251, 252, 253, 254, 321, 322, 32 and 324, with a total mileage of 992km, realizing the convenient highway transportation from Xuzhou to various counties and surrounding cities. 

Up to the end of 2010, the total highway mileage in Xuzhou has become 16174.702km, herein 729.871 km of national highway, 734.875km of provincial highway, 2309.336km of county highway, 5887.634km of town highway and 6512.986km of village highway. There are 4452 highway bridges in the city, extending 207542.88 linear meters. The highway access rate of administrative villages in the city is 100%.

Railway 

The construction started from the beginning of last century (1910). It is the junction of Beijing – Shanghai Railway, Lanzhou – Lianyungang Railway and Xinyi – Changxing Railway (Hai San Railway) and the junction of Beijing – Shanghai High Speed Rail in service, Xuzhou – Lanzhou High Speed Rail to be commenced and Beijing –Fuzhou High Speed Rail under construction. “If you can go to Xuzhou, you can go to everywhere in China.” As the “throat of Chinese railway”, Xuzhou is still the second largest railway hub and the eighth largest railway station in China after a hundred years.

2.Xuzhou is the second largest marshalling station in Asia and one of the marshalling stations in China with the highest rank (bi-direction, third-rank and six-field) (eight ones in China: Xuzhou North Railway Station, Harbin South Railway Station, Shenyangnan Railway Station, Fengtai West Railway Station, Shijiazhuang Railway Station, Zhengzhoubei Station, Zhuzhou North Railway Station and Nancang Railway Station)

3.Xuzhou is an important central site of Beijing – Shanghai Railway in China. 

4.Xuzhou is an important central site of Lanzhou – Lianyungang Railway in China.

5.Xinyi is an important central site of Ha San Railway in China.

6.Xuzhou is the central site of Beijing- Shanghai Expressway and the east starting point of Xuzhou –Lanzhou High Speed Rail. 

7.Xuzhou East Railway Station is not only one of the seven main stations of Beijing – Shanghai High Speed Rail but also the main hub of Xuzhou – Lanzhou High Speed Railway. After the opening of Xuzhou East Railway Station, Xuzhou will step into the “three-hour economic circle” of Yangtze River Delta and “two-hour urban economic circle” of Beijing and Shanghai. After the opening of Zhengzhou – Xuzhou High Speed Railway, Xuzhou will step into the “one-hour urban economic circle” of Nanjing, Jinan and Zhengzhou. They will bring tremendous stimulus effect on the development of Xuzhou. 

Airway 

Xuzhou Guan Yin Airport is a large international airport in Huaihai Economic Zone with the largest scale, the most advanced facilities and the highest rank (4D). The buildings of the terminal cover an area of 24 thousand m2, able to receive passenger handling capacity of 1 million and an hourly passenger flow volume of 800 during rush hour. Guan Yin Airport has opened the airline to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taibei, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Kunming, Chengdu, Dalian, Taiyuan, Xiamen, Wenzhou, Harbin, Bangkok, etc., and will open the airline to Xi’an, Urumchi, etc. Moreover, Guan Yin Airport will open international airlines to Southeast Asia, Japan, Russia, North America and West Europe so as to make Xuzhou more open to the world. 

Waterway 

As for waterway, Xuzhou has planned a cruising range of 1039.0km with 50 fairways and a waterway network density of 9.23 km/million km2 and has realized an actual cruising range of 1014.2km. herein, Beijing – Hangzhou Canal is 181.5km long and all the waterways are planned as second grade channel. As a national waterway trunk, Beijing –Hangzhou Canal plays an increasingly important role in economic and social development of the region. 

Xuzhou is the main hub city of inland waterway transport and it is awarded as one of the main inland ports in China by the Ministry of Communication. Up to the end of 2010, there has been 712 berths in various categories of ports and wharfs with a designed handling capacity of 9907tons. Wanzhai harbor under Xu Zhou Port Group is known as the largest coal harbor in Beijing – Hangzhou Canal and an important national inland hub port, playing an important role for coal supply in East China.

Pipeline 

Luning Petroleum Pipeline passes through East China Oil Transportation Authority in Xuzhou. The length of pipeline is 128km long in Xuzhou, which is a component of the national petroleum lifeline. 

Subway 

As for Xuzhou Subway or Xuzhou Rail Transit, the urban rapid rail in Xuzhou is divided into recent, long-tern (2020) and long-range (2050) planning according to Xuzhou Urban Rail Transit Network Planning and Xuzhou Urban Rail Transit Construction Planning. It only takes 13 months from the submission of the rail transit construction planning of the city to the National Development and Reform Commission to the approval of State Council, which is the fastest in all the 35 cities in China. According to Xuzhou Urban Rapid Rail Transit Construction Planning (2013-2020), it is estimated to construction the stage I engineering of rail transit No. 1, 2 and 3 to 2020 with a total length of 67km, herein, 60.6km of underground part and 6.4km of elevated part and the total investment of the construction project is 44.328 billion Yuan. It will construct a rail transit network connecting the old downtown of Xuzhou to the new downtown, Tongshan New District, Bashan District and East City New District. [30] The project plans to initiate the first stage of Rail Transit No. 1 and the construction period will is estimated to last 5 years. Long-term network is composed of 4 lines with a total length of 117.9km. Up to 2050, west-extending part of No.5 and No.4 will be construction with a total length of 151.9km.
