Xuzhou is the cradle of Peng Zu culture and Han culture and epitome of Xu culture. Xuzhou was called Pengcheng in ancient times and enjoys a civilization history of more than 6000 years. The founding of Xuzhou City can be sourced to the Kingdom of Dapengshi founded by Emperor Yao over 4000 thousand years ago. The first appearance of the name Pengcheng on record was in the Spring and Autumn Period, i.e. 573 BC. It is the earliest city in Jiangsu province. During Emperor Yu’s water conservancy, he divided the whole nation into nine states, of which Xuzhou was one. At that time, “Xuzhou” was the name of a natural economic region only and Pengcheng is the center of the region. During the reign of Emperor Yao, Peng Zu founded the Kingdom of Dapengshi, which is the source of the name of Pengcheng and a commonly recognized cradle for people with the family name of Peng all over the world. As a cradle for Chinese food culture and health maintenance culture, Xuzhou has a great number of precious relics of Peng Zu’s food culture and health maintenance culture. According to legend, Peng Zu, the founder of the Kingdom of Dapengshi, lived 800 years and was the originator of Chinese cooking and Qigong. Peng Zu was influential in history. He was highly esteemed by Confucius and was credited as one of the founders of Daoism. The essence of Peng Zu’s health maintenance culture is “the homology of medicine and food, health maintenance through food”. Moreover, health maintenance and beauty preservation through massage is now very popular all over the world, of which Peng Zu is the earliest founder. The dietetic health maintenance method of Peng Zu has significant influence on the formation and development of Han culture.

“A good place is not easily found, yet it is known to those who have been there”, “Come to Xuzhou in Han Dynasties, Xi’an in Qin and Tang Dynasties and Beijing in Ming and Qing Dynasties”. The most attractive part of Xuzhou is its colorful Han culture relics, such as the Tomb of King of Chu on Lion Mountain, Han tomb on Guishan, Xima platform, Sishui pavilion, Bawang building, Gefeng pavilion, Sword-drawing spring, Zifang temple, Tomb of Wang Ling’s mother, Yanggui Mountain pavilion, Han Terra-Cotta Warriors. Xuzhou is the hometown of Han Gaozu Liu Bang. The Dynasty of Han, the first strong feudal empire with a long duration in Chinese history started from here and stepped onto the arena of history. The powerful Han Dynasty corresponded with the Ancient Roman Empire, becoming the strongest empire of the world at that time. The main body of the nation of China, Han, the Chinese character we write and the Chinese language we speak are all closely related to this dynasty. This character “Han” has been integrated into the blood of Chinese people and become the most striking totem of the nation.
