Appreciation of the work
The 1957 visit to Germany to sketch was unique. Li Keran captures a series of unforgettable images with his fresh senses. "As if arriving from another planet, looking at everything with unfamiliar eyes, full of fresh sensations" (Kechen on sketching). With his oriental eyes, heart and hands, he creates an artistic European world that is captivating and astonishing.
"An experienced painter who sketches does not necessarily type in pencil, and his pictures are often handled just right" ("On Learning Landscape Painting"). The Chinese painter, sitting on a small stool facing the spire-topped church of Meissen, sketched with a brush that attracted an increasing number of Germans to watch. The brush strokes start at the top of the church, and the strong lines outline the straight church spire, the walls of the building, etc., as well as the people moving in and out. By the time the painting finishes the corner of the side wall of the street light, no more, no less, the brush will be finished, and all the admirers will be amazed.
